Chinese Carmakers Gain 7% EU Market Share in 2025 as EV Imports Surge

According to a report from the South China Morning Post, Chinese automotive manufacturers are increasing their presence in Europe, displacing competitors from other Asian nations. The European Automobile Manufacturers Association stated that imports of vehicles built in China into the European Union surpassed one million units in 2025, representing a significant annual increase. The monetary value of those imports saw a much smaller rise, indicating that many of the cars were sold at lower price points.
Cars made in China represented seven percent of total EU sales in 2025, a rise from five percent the previous year. Over the same period, the market share for Japanese and South Korean brands held steady. The competitive strength of Chinese brands is particularly noted in electric and hybrid vehicle segments, which are gaining market share as demand for traditional engine types declines. Data from March showed that the largest Chinese automaker, BYD, registered more vehicles in Europe than Tesla for a second straight month in February.
Concurrently, European automotive exports to China experienced a sharp decline last year. Both the volume and the total value of EU passenger car shipments to China fell substantially, according to the industry report.
