Commerce Awards $37M for EV-Charging Infrastructure

June 9, 2026

The Washington State Department of Commerce has awarded $37.3 million in grants to support 104 electric-vehicle charging projects across the state, funding the installation of 754 new charging ports by late 2027.

The funding, provided through the Washington Electric Vehicle Charging Program, was awarded to 43 organizations and will support both public and multifamily housing-charging sites. Planned installations include 550 Level 2 chargers and 204 DC fast-charging ports.

According to a recent press release, state officials estimate EV owners using the new charging network could save more than $1,000 annually on fuel expenses compared to gas-powered vehicles.

The program’s second round of awards brings total state investment in EV-charging infrastructure to $135 million, supporting more than 5,500 charging ports statewide.

“We’re prioritizing investments where they will have the greatest impact,” Sarah Clifthorne, interim director for the Washington Department of Commerce, said in the release. “Reliable charging infrastructure is critical for people who live, work, learn, and travel outside our urban centers.”
