CAIRO – 10 May 2026: Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to expanding the use of electric vehicles as part of the country’s broader strategy to modernize transportation, improve energy efficiency, and support sustainable economic growth while reducing environmental impact.
The remarks came during a meeting with Finance Minister Ahmed Kouchouk to review the government’s roadmap for transitioning public sector fleets to electric vehicles and the measures being implemented to support the initiative.
According to Cabinet spokesperson Mohamed El-Homsani, the government’s strategy focuses on reducing public spending, lowering fuel consumption, and easing pressure on petroleum imports through greater reliance on clean energy solutions.
The plan also seeks to enhance the efficiency of government vehicle operations, positioning the public sector as a leading example in adopting green transportation policies in line with Egypt’s sustainability goals.
Discussions further covered the development of the infrastructure and digital systems required to support the wider adoption of electric vehicles across the country. Key proposals include expanding fast and smart charging networks, introducing vehicle classifications based on usage needs, and strengthening cybersecurity protections while ensuring compliance with international safety standards.
During the meeting, the finance minister presented a comparative study highlighting the financial benefits of replacing conventional fuel-powered vehicles with electric alternatives, with the findings showing substantial long-term savings.
Madbouly directed ministries and relevant authorities to maintain close coordination to speed up the implementation process and remove any obstacles facing the transition plan, stressing the importance of achieving the state’s targets for spending efficiency and sustainable energy use.
The prime minister also instructed the Ministry of Finance to begin negotiations with electric vehicle dealers to secure the most competitive offers ahead of purchasing the first batch of electric cars for government officials, replacing traditional fuel-powered vehicles.
