Meta Shares Drop 7% as AI Spending and Regulatory Challenges Weigh on Growth

Shares of Meta Platforms dropped roughly 7% following the company’s most recent quarterly report, which revealed both higher spending on artificial intelligence and a slower pace of user growth compared to the previous quarter.

According to the company’s earnings statement, as cited by Yahoo Finance, Meta flagged two key challenges to its business. The first involves rising costs, particularly those linked to its AI investments. Meta raised its expected capital expenditure range for the current year to between $125 billion and $145 billion, an increase of $10 billion from January on both the lower and upper ends. The company attributed this to expectations for higher component pricing this year and, to a lesser extent, additional data center costs to support future capacity. The increased spending reflects both the opportunity presented by AI and higher prices across a number of inputs, including chips, raw materials, land, and permitting.

The second challenge is regulatory. In its earnings statement, Meta noted that it continues to monitor active legal and regulatory matters, including headwinds in the EU and the U.S. that could significantly affect its business and financial results. The company cited ongoing scrutiny on youth-related issues, with additional trials scheduled in the U.S. this year that may ultimately result in a material loss. A New Mexico jury ordered Meta to pay a $375 million penalty after finding that it misled users about platform safety and endangered children. In a similar case in Los Angeles, a jury found Meta negligent for designing a social media platform harmful to minors, ordering the company to pay $4.2 million in damages.

Given that Meta reported operating income of $22.8 billion in its latest quarter, these current dollar amounts are immaterial to the company. However, the fact that the rising threat of a persistent and growing legal headache is receiving nearly top billing in Meta’s earnings release signals the potential scale of the problem for the company in the future.
